About Our Founder,
Gary Oelze
(1942–2023)
The Birchmere exists because one young Air Force veteran from Kentucky fell in love with great songs and the people who sing them. When Gary Oelze first opened The Birchmere as a modest neighborhood restaurant in 1966, live music was simply a way to bring a little more life into the room. Very quickly, it became his life’s work.
From those early bluegrass nights in a Shirlington strip mall to our current home on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, Gary personally shaped The Birchmere into one of America’s great listening rooms—a place where you can hear a pin drop, a lyric land, and an artist feel truly heard. He insisted on great sound, real hospitality, and a “quiet, please” respect between audience and performer that remains at the heart of every show here.
Over more than five decades, Gary welcomed an astonishing range of artists to this stage—icons and first-timers alike—and championed new voices long before they were household names. Many musicians have said their careers were changed by a night at The Birchmere and by Gary’s belief in them.
In 2021, Gary helped capture the story in All Roads Lead to The Birchmere: America’s Legendary Music Hall, a book that chronicles the history, humor, and heart he poured into this room. When he passed away in January 2023 at the age of 80, tributes poured in from fans, artists, neighbors, and friends who felt they had lost not just a club owner, but a gracious host and guardian of live music.
Today, every show at The Birchmere is part of Gary’s ongoing legacy: a warm welcome at the door, a good meal at the table, world-class music onstage, and a room full of people who still come here—just as he hoped—to really listen.
