The Sun Ra Arkestra, directed by Marshall Allen, will be live at Birchmere on May 19.

The show will be a celebration of Marshall’s turning 100 years young on May 25.

The Arkestra are known worldwide for their live shows that combine big band swing, space age jazz, singing, dancing and Afro-pagentry.

The Arkestra have recorded more than 100 albums. Their 2020 album”Swirling” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Big Band Jazz Ensemble recording.

Maestro Marshall Allen was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Foundation of America at the Apollo Theater in April.

Marshall continues to write and record with the Arkestra and he performs with them on select shows. He will be conducting the band live on stage at the Birchmere show.
